"Pola Chapelle asked me to investigate why a well-known judge deals out heavy punishment for petty sugar-related crimes."

There is one Bonus Case that can be found.

Solution

Pola Chapelle: Got a minute? I stumbled upon something disturbing while writing a piece on the sugar ban and how the authorities enforce it.

Pola Chapelle: There's a judge, named Harshfield, who passes very severe judgement for pettiest sugar-related crimes. I don't think it's fair! People just want to enjoy sweets, you know?

Detective: Wait, what are you suggesting? That we should go against a... judge? Does Jameson know about your idea?

Pola Chapelle: I'm just saying that we should check it out, that's all. And yes, Jameson approved this. If you're still not convinced, he also arranged a reward for you if you crack this case.

Detective: Nothing like a cash incentive to take on a risky case. Count me in.

Witnesses

  • 2 fingerprints
  • 3 photos
  • 2 maps
  • 2 fingerprints

  • 3 maps
  • 1 fingerprint

If you fail:

Detective: Pola is overreacting. Judge Harshfield is well-known for strict veredicts, but they're absolutely lawful.

If you win:

Detective: Judge Harshfield personally asked to proceed over those trials, and the gossip suggests he might be with... or for someone.

Detective: They must meet from time to time and that means I can trace them.

City search: Benefit of the Doubt

Detective: We should follow the judge and see who's his contact.

Pola Chapelle: I'll bet they're going to "accidentally" meet in some public area, to avoid suspicion.

The meeting place is:

  • not more than 2 from a bank
  • in the distance of 1 from water
  • more than 2 from a hotel
  • more than 1 from a press building
  • more than 3 from railways
  • more than 1 from a police station
  • not more than 4 from a post office
  • On the map there are 3 banks
  • On the map there are 2 hotels
  • On the map there are 2 police stations

Solution: (7,5)

If you fail:

Detective: Oh darn! We lost the judge...

If you win:

Detective: It looks like the judge is waiting for someone in the park. We better split up - maybe we'll be able to see who is the judge meeting with.

Pola Chapelle: Sure thing. I'll cover the main entrance while you take the side gate.

Suspect identification: Who Watches the Watchmen?

Detective: Darn, I must've missed him. I just got a glimpse of a guy in a coat and fedora. And how about you, Pola?

Pola Chapelle: I think I can tell you what the person looked like...

Solution: Wayne Callahan

If you fail:

Detective: without identifying the person properly, I won't be able to get to the bottom of this intrigue.

If you win:

Detective: That man is working with the city police department.

Pola Chapelle: Yeah, I think the judge gave him something... a file?

Detective: That's very suspicious. We should check what's inside that folder.

Crime scene search: Dura Lex Sed Lex.

Pola Chapelle: Are you sure we should be doing this? We're talking about snatching something from the police station!

Detective: Were not snatching anything. I just want to take a look at that folder

When you find the bonus case:

Detective: A police report. Hmmm... this looks bad. Despite the ban, more and more children in the neighborhood eat candy. Detectives suspect that someone is selling sweets to kids.

If you fail:

Lucy Gordon: Hey, what are you doing snooping around the station with that journalist chick, hmm?

Detective: I wasn't snooping, I was... uh...

Lucy Gordon: Right, right. I like you, but I cannot let you break the rules. Now scram before someone sees you. And take the pencil pusher with you.

If you win:

Detective: I think this is the folder. Hmmm. A criminal file of a person sentenced by Judge Harshfield just recently...

Pola Chapelle: Hey, it's written here that he was a prime suspect in a murder case, but was acquitted on a technicality!

Detective: I think I know where's this heading. I bet each one of those Harshfield's convicts were criminals who previously escaped justice in some way.

Finale

If you fail:

Detective: This isn't working, Pola. Snooping around a judge is a bad idea. I'm sure he's doing it for all the right reasons.

Pola Chapelle: Yeah, right. And the candy mob is stealing from the rich and giving to the poor. I know Judge Harshfield is knee-deep in something foul! If we just could prove it...

If you win:

Pola Chapelle: I need to do something about this. What Judge Harshfield's doing is wrong. It's basically vigilante justice!

Detective: It's not vigilante justice. He's using the law to get to people who slipped through the cracks. Let it go.

Pola Chapelle: You're telling me I shouldn't write an article about it?!

Detective: You could tone it down. Show the reader both sides of the same coin. Judge Harshfield is using the new law to catch dangerous crooks, but what if he oversteps?.

Pola Chapelle: All right. Fine. But I'm doing it for you, not for Judge Harshfield. And you'll be owing me a favour, sweetie.

Pola Chapelle: All right. Fine. But I'm doing it for you, not for Judge Harshfield. And you'll be owing me a favour, girl.
