"A spy rummaged through Covet's personal notes and the mayor fears his newest sugar-ban bill might leak to the press. That's why he called me for help."
Solution
Alphonse Covet: Detective, I require your utmost assistance. There was a break-in at the city hall at night and I need someone...discreet to settle the matter.
Detective: Discreetness is my profession, mayor. What was stolen?
Alphonse Covet: Nothing physical. It's a case of espionage. Witnesses reported seeing a camera flash from inside the building. There was only one, possible target for a spy in that part of the city hall.
Alphonse Covet: My office. And inside, the draft of my newest sugar ban bill. I bet someone want's to sell it to the press... or worse.
Detective: This sounds serious. I'll do everything to retrieve the copy of the manuscript.
Witnesses
Detective: I need to check out the security at the city hall and interview the eyewitnesses.
- 2 fingerprints
- 2 maps
- 3 photos
- 2 fingerprints
- 2 maps
- 2 photos
If you fail:
Detective: Darn it. Nobody saw anything useful, paart from the camera flash, and somehow the spy slipped past security. I don't have any leads. If you win:
Detective: Oh, no. I think I know how the espionage was done. It was an inside job! The security at the city hall is so strict, only a person with access to the offices could do it.
Suspect identification: City Hall Treachery
Detective: I need to fish out the spy from amongst all the people who could've had access to the city hall.

If you fail:
Detective: I was sure that was the person!
Alphonse Covet: Detective, I cannot let you slander my employees with unbacked accusations. Your services would be no longer necessary.
If you win:
Detective: Who do we have here... Nicole Pravinsky, an intern. Hired not long ago, previous occupation... Daily News. That's Perry J. Jameson's newspaper!
City search: The Highest Vidder
Detective: Pola, Do you know someone from the daily news called Nicole Pravinsky?
Pola Chapelle: Maybe I did, maybe I didn't. Trying to ditch me for another reporter?.
Detective: No, Pola, it's for a case. She's a suspect. She might've...overstepped with her methods of getting sensational material.
Pola Chapelle: Splendid. I'll tell you where to find Mr. Jameson. You can sort it out with him. But you'll give me something in return...
Detective: What? You can't write an article about a case against your own boss!
Pola Chapelle: Oh, I believe you'll manage to find something interesting that'll help my career. Now, about Mr. Jameson...
Mr. Jameson is
- exactly 3 from a port
- in the distance of 1 from water
- more than 1 from churches
- more than 2 from post offices
- more than 1 from schools
- not more than 6 from a theater
- On the map there are 2 ports.
- On the map there are 2 churches.
If you fail:
Detective: I can't find Perry J. Jameson. He's probably surrounded by a bunch of assistants and bodyguards anyway.
If you win:
Detective: A golf course. Perfect.
Detective: Can I have a word with you, Perry? Do you recall an intern, named Nicole Pravinsky? She was working for you not long ago.
Perry J. Jameson: I run a newspaper, boy. I've got dozens of people come and go every week. Why are you looking for this Pravinsky, anyway?
Detective: There was a break-in at the city hall. Mayor Covet is afraid that someone might've copied the text of his newest bill.
Perry J. Jameson: Sorry to disappoint the mayor, but that bill is old news! I already have a copy on my desk, waiting to be used... when the time is right. Are you sure the crook was after the draft, and not plain old cash?
Crime scene search: Photogenic Evidence
Detective: Perry is right. I need to double-check the facts. The witnesses saw a camera flash, so I'm sure Nicole tried to copy something. But what? I need to find out.
If you fail:
Detective: I'm at a loss here. Maybe Perry was wrong and the spy was really after the bill all along.
If you win:
Detective: The city sewer plans. I bet that if I check it for prints, I'll get a solid proof Nicole was interested in them. I should call the mayor.
Alphonse Covet: Did you catch the crook? Retrieve the photos of the bill?
Detective: The crook is still at large, but I think your bill is safe. The spy wasn't after it at all. She wanted to copy the sewer plans of the city.
Alphonse Covet: Really? That's bizarre. But I'm happy my draft is safe. I'll just give the case to the police, then. But don't worry, I'll give you the reward.
Detective: I'm not worried about the reward. I'm worried about how the thieves can use the sewer blueprints to their own ends...
Finale
If you fail:
Alphonse Covet[1]: I'm sorry, mayor. The thief is gone and I can only assume the copy of the bill is gone as well.
Detective: That's bad, really bad. I'm disappointed in you, detective. Now I'll have to depend on my contacts in the media to stop the bill from reaching the press.
If you win:
Pola Chapelle: I hope you solved the case successfully, because I still need something for my big article.
Detective: Oh, I've got something for you, all right. Someone broke into the city hall and copied the plans of the sewer network.
Pola Chapelle: So how are they planning to use them? That sounds like a big operation.
Detective: I don't know... yet. But I suspect there's someone smart behind the whole thing. Not your ordinary street thug.
Pola Chapelle: A criminal Mastermind! I like it. Keep me in the loop, and I promise you'll end up on the front page.
