"Sam Lowry alerted me that someone's asking questions about the Bravucci case. I need to know why."

SolutionEdit

Sam Lowry: Hi there, detective. I haven't seen you lately.

Detective: Yeah. I try to get out of the office once in a while. I've been neglecting my personal life long enough.

Sam Lowry: Oh, wow. She's the toughest cop I've ever seen, and sweet as a bee. You're a lucky man, detective.

Detective: Not everything is so hunky-dory. Since Pola wrote that article in the Daily News, I've been doing mostly small cases from the newspaper ads. Lucy's furious, but she can't send any cases my way, the commissioner is looking over her shoulder.

Sam Lowry: Oh my. Well, maybe I could hire you. I've heard some disturbing things lately. You remember the fire Bravucci started to get insurance?

Detective: How could I forget.

Sam Lowry: Well, someone's been snooping around, asking about that investigation. I'll be glad if you could check it out, for a paycheck of course.

Sam Lowry: Oh, wow. I've heard Leo is quite the charming rascal. You're a lucky woman, detective.

Detective: Not everything is so hunky-dory. Since Pola wrote that article in the Daily News, I've been doing mostly small cases from the newspaper ads. Leo tries to help, but his associates rarely hire private investigators.

Detective: How could I forget.

WitnessesEdit

Detective: I remember that case like it was yesterday. Bravucci started the fire to collect insurance, and the inferno claimed Paul Litzer's life. Why is someone investigating those old events? What's more to it?

Detective: Hi! Still working for the Metropolitan Insurance Agency, aren't you? Sam Lowry told me someone's been snooping around, asking questions about an old case.

Maud Beans: The Bravucci case, that's correct. I told them nothing, but they insisted. They even left a phone number if I change my mind.

Detective: Great! I'll track down the snooper.

City search: Part Time JobEdit

Detective: The phone number is registered somewhere in this area. I need to find the right building.

Maud Beans has been called from:

  • not more than 1 from a museum
  • exactly 3 from a hotel
  • more than 2 from theaters
  • not on water
  • more than 1 from landmarks
  • not more than 2 from a port

Solution: (8,9)

Detective: A police station? So this must be the number of...

Detective: Wayne Callahan! How's it going?

Wayne Callahan: You're waiting for Lucy? She's running a long shift today.

Detective: And you? Got some big case on your mind?

Wayne Callahan: Nah. I'm doing private work. Just like you, you know? I make extra money doing basic P. I stuff.

Wayne Callahan: Maybe I'm not as good as you, but I have my ways. Access to the forensic science division, for instance. I'd tell you more about the job but this is strictly confidential.

Detective: I don't mind. The city's big enough for both of us. I'll come back later, when Lucy's off her shift.

Wayne Callahan: Bailing out your boyfriend from jail again?

Detective: Nah. he's been good lately. Just P.I. business. And you? Got some big case on your mind?

Wayne Callahan: Nah. I'm doing private work. Just like you, you know? I make extra money doing basic P. I stuff.

Wayne Callahan: Maybe I'm not as good as you, but I have my ways. Access to the forensic science division, for instance. I'd tell you more about the job but this is strictly confidential.

Detective: I don't mind. The city's big enough for both of us. Well, I need to get back to business. Have a nice day!

Suspect identification: Lab GeekEdit

Detective: I need to find out who's Callahan's contact in the forensic division.

Solution: Steve E. Koenig

Detective: Steve E. Koenig is a forensic consultant on electronic devices and weapon ballistics. I think I need to check out his work.

Crime scene search: Digging Up Old CasesEdit

Detective: The forensic science division. I don't have the access Callahan has, so it'll be hard to sneak in. But it's my only chance to figure out what Steve E. Koenig was doing for Callahan.

When you find the solution:

Detective: Empty cases, .45 caliber. And a name tag for the client. Pola Chapelle. I'll just wait for her here.

Detective: Pola Chapelle. Well, well. Why are you digging this up? You've got a lot of explaining to do.

Pola Chapelle: Yes, I do. I bet you figured this out already - my father was murdered in cold blood. Bravucci started the fire to cover up the shooting. I need to know the truth about my father's death. Why was he killed?

Pola Chapelle: I know it was ruthless of me to sling mud at you, but I had no choice - that was part of my deal with Jameson. He promised me unlimited support in my investigation. Now I know he played me for a fool, but then... my father's death was all that mattered.

Detective: I get it. When Jameson landed in jail with no intent of helping you, you decided to change the course of action. Knowing you can't come to me, you hired Callahan.

Pola Chapelle: Yes. That's all to it. I won't beg for forgiveness, detective. I did what I felt was right and my regret won't change the past. But if you ever want to help me with my investigation, I'll pay fair and square.

FinaleEdit

Detective: ... and that's how it ended,. I don't know what to think, sweetie.

Lucy Gordon: Maybe Pola bared her motives, but I still don't trust her, after what she's done to your reputation. I'm afraid she's just trying to use you for her own need.

Detective: You may be right. I'll have too think it through. Well, at least Sam paid me for my work. That was my first serious case in months!

Lucy Gordon: Well, the money is a plus. At least now we can go shopping together for Jack and Betty's wedding gift.

Detective: Oh, right, I almost forgot Jack and Betty are getting married soon!

Lucy Gordon: A true romantic. No wonder it took you so long to ask me out on a proper date!

Detective: ... and that's how it ended,. I don't know what to think, Lucy. That's why I asked for your help.

Lucy Gordon: Maybe Pola bared her motives, but I still don't trust her, after what she's done to your reputation. I'm afraid she's just trying to use you for her own need.

Detective: You may be right. I'll have to think it through. Well, at least Sam paid me for my work. That was my first serious case in months!

Lucy Gordon: So, you'll be chipping in on the wedding gift for Betty and Jack?

Detective: Oh, right, I almost forgot Jack and Betty are getting married soon!

Lucy Gordon: Chick flicks aren't your style, are they? No wonder it took you so long before you went on a proper date with Leo!
